ABSTRACT

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune disease, of unknown cause.
Objective: To determine survival in patients with systemic sclerosis, variables associated with systemic sclerosis and causes of death.
Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted in patients with systemic sclerosis, attended in the rheumatology service of the "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Hospital from January 3, 2005 to December 31, 2018, the survival rate, causes of death and associated variables were determined. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to determine survival rates. For the identification of independent variables associated with mortality, Cox regression was used with the calculation of relative risks with their respective 95 % confidence intervals. A significance level of <0.05 was set for all hypothesis tests.
Results: 131 patients (119 women, 12 men) were included. Overall survival was 92 %, 87 %, 80 %, at 5 years, 10 years and 15 years respectively, 18 patients died (13.7 %), the most frequent cause of death was interstitial lung disease (40 %), variables associated with mortality were the diffuse form of the disease, the presence of intestinal malabsorption and pulmonary hypertension: Remarkable survival rates were achieved, the presence of pulmonary hypertension constituted a risk factor for mortality and the limited clinical form was shown to be a protective factor in terms of mortality.
