ABSTRACT
Chlamydia trachomatis (
Ct ) is an obligate intracellular, gram-negative bacterium considered the leading cause of sexually
transmitted infections (STIS). The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that in 2020,
Ct caused approximately 128.5
million new sti cases worldwide in people aged 15 to 49 years. In women, a high percentage of
Ct infections are often
asymptomatic, favoring repeated infections that carry a higher risk of pelvic inflammatory disease. The sustained inflammatory
microenvironment leads to tubal pathology, with chronic pain, ectopic pregnancies, and infertility due to tubal
damage. The incidence of
Ct infection in Mexican women ranges between 3 and 13%.
sti prevention programs have been ineffective, particularly with
Ct . There is a high prevalence, relatively ineffective
screening programs, and a high frequency of asymptomatic infections with significant morbidity in women and their
unborn children. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop more effective prevention strategies. Vaccination should be
considered as a possibility. To date, no vaccines against Chlamydia trachomatis have been marketed, and all are in different
stages of evaluation. This document presents some of the advances in vaccine development.
