ABSTRACT

We present the first case we managed involving an enterocutaneous fistula and intravenous hyperalimentation in 1975. The patient ultimately developed two entero-atmospheric fistulas requiring surgical management. He was successfully rescued from this adverse event without postoperative morbidity. This case demonstrated the innovative importance of intravenous nutrition in surgical outcomes, as well as the motivation and inspiration of a mentor, the need for humility in seeking expert help, and the importance of interdisciplinary team collaboration.
