Risk Factors for Disability in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain

ABSTRACT
Objective: To analyze the relationship
between occupational risk factors and
the degree of disability in patients with
chronic low back pain (clbp) managed
at a primary care unit.
Methods:
A cross-sectional analytical study was
conducted using non-probability convenience
sampling, 161 patients (95%
confidence interval). Patients aged 30 to
60 years with a diagnosis of chronic low
back pain were included. Variables evaluated
included occupational risk factors
(type of employment, work shift, physical
workload, and posture), sociodemographic
variables, body mass index (bmi),
and degree of disability.
Results: There
was a predominance of females (56.5%)
and the 50–60 age group (44.1%). Most
participants were overweight (54.0%)
and held office positions (28.6%). According
to the Oswestry Disability Index,
66.5% of the patients exhibited moderate
disability (21–40%). A statistically significant
association (p<0.05) was identified
between bmi and disability.
Conclusion:
In patients with chronic low back pain
treated in a primary care setting, body
mass index was significantly associated
with a higher degree of disability, whereas
the occupational factors evaluated
showed no statistical association. These
findings highlight the clinical relevance
of body weight regarding the degree of
disability observed in patients with chronic
low back pain.
