Level of Knowledge of Dengue and Preventive Measures in an Adult Population

ABSTRACT
Objective:
to estimate the level of
knowledge regarding dengue, warning
signs, and prevention in an adult
population.
Methods:
an analytical
cross-sectional study. A total of 382
participants were included through
simple random sampling; selection
criteria included age between 18 and
65 years, and literacy. The instrument
“Level of Knowledge Among Residents
on Dengue, Warning Signs, and
Prevention”; was applied, which has a
Cronbach’s alpha of 0.837, and classifies
responses into high, intermediate,
and low knowledge levels. Statistical
analysis included frequencies, percentages,
mean, and standard deviation. To
compare differences between scores and
demographic characteristics, the χ2 test
was used, considering a value of p<0.05
as statistically significant.
Results:
participants
included 261 women and 121
men, with a mean age of 41.99 years
(±13.98). The most frequent categories
identified were married status 46.6%
(n= 178); bachelor’s degree at 29.58%
(n= 113); and manual workers at
35.86% (n= 137). Of the participants,
62.57% (n= 239) reported no prior
history of dengue fever. Regarding level
of knowledge, 35.34% (n= 135) showed
low level, 53.14% (n= 203) intermediate
level, and 11.52% (n= 44) high
level. The section evaluating warning
signs showed low level of knowledge
with 272 responses (71.2%), while
the best-evaluated section was general
knowledge with 112 responses (29.3%).
No statistical difference was found
between the level of knowledge and a
history of prior dengue infection p=
0.107.
Conclusion:
The level of knowledge
regarding dengue, warning signs,
and prevention in the studied population
was predominantly intermediate
and low, with significant deficiencies in
identifying clinical gravity signs.
