Factors Associated with Knowledge, Attitude, and Perception Toward Pulmonary Tuberculosis

ABSTRACT

Objective: to identify sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors associated with levels of knowledge, attitude, and perception regarding tuberculosis among users of a medical unit. Methods: an analytical cross-sectional study conducted from January to April 2025, including users of a family medicine unit aged 20 years and older. The data collection instrument used to assess knowledge, attitude, and perception of pulmonary tuberculosis was a self-administered survey consisting of 25 items. Descriptive statistics were performed with calculation of frequencies and proportions; odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were obtained to establish associations. Results: 328 participants were included. A low level of knowledge about tuberculosis was identified in 0.3% of participants, moderate in 8.2%, and high in 91.5%. Regarding attitude, 2.7% reported an inadequate attitude, 30.5% moderate, and 66.8% adequate. In terms of perception, 6.1% showed an inadequate perception, 43% moderate, and 50.9% adequate. Female sex and age 41 to 60 years were associated with lower level of knowledge about tuberculosis; while having higher education was related to adequate attitude. No significant factors were associated with the level of perception. Conclusion: Users reported a high level of knowledge; however, gaps were identified in attitude and perception toward the disease. Implementing educational strategies is necessary to improve these areas regarding tuberculosis among the beneficiaries, aiming to promote healthy behaviors and reduce the stigma toward individuals living with the disease.
