ABSTRACT

Choriocarcinoma is a germ cell tumor with highly malignant behavior whose location is usually gonadal. Extragonadal presentation is extremely rare and carries a poor prognosis in the absence of timely diagnosis and resection. As there are less than 100 cases reported in the literature, there is no clear consensus on the treatment they should receive. We present the case of a patient who received timely surgical resection without adjuvant chemotherapy. It is a 41 year old woman who presented with dyspnea and pleuritic pain, right pneumothorax was evidenced by radiography, and pneumatocele by tomography; which led us to the non-anatomic wedge resection of the responsible segment and whose histopathological report documented a primary pulmonary choriocarcinoma. Due to the wide margins of the resection it was decided not to indicate adjuvant chemotherapy. At follow-up, there was no evidence of further metastatic disease or recurrent pneumothorax at 12 months.
