Analgesic control with epidural elastomeric pump in urological patients under 10 years of age

ABSTRACT
Introduction: post-surgical pain and its control is really important for a faster recovery; anesthesiologists currently have tools that prevent it and that have given good results in adults, such as elastomeric pump; studies who evaluate its use in children are needed.
Objectives: to evaluate the analgesic control of the use of the epidural elastomeric pump in pediatric patients undergoing urological surgery.
Material and methods: retrospective, observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, retrospective study. Data were collected from clinical records of patients under 10 years of age, male and female, who underwent urological surgeries.
Results: there were 75 patients, 49 males (65.3%), with a mean age of 5.6 ± 2.4 years. The predominant surgery was pyeloplasty (26.6%). Pain was 2.3 (interquartile range 2.1-2.8) 13.3% required emergency analgesia. 1.3% had a prolonged hospital stay and 5.3% had delayed ambulation. No other complications occurred.
Conclusions: epidural elastomeric pumps were safe and effective for pain control in children.
