Comparative analysis of postoperative hypothermia according to the type of anesthesia used in a private hospital (January-July 2024)

ABSTRACT

Introduction: perioperative hypothermia is a common complication affecting postoperative recovery. Its incidence varies depending on the type of anesthesia, highlighting the need to analyze its impact on perioperative management. Objective: to compare the incidence of postoperative hypothermia according to anesthesia type in patients at Hospital Ángeles Acoxpa (January-July 2024). Material and methods: observational, retrospective, and analytical study reviewing records of patients undergoing surgery with balanced general anesthesia (BGA), regional, mixed (regional + sedation), sedation, and total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). Demographic and perioperative variables, including pre- and postoperative temperatures, were recorded. χ2 and ANOVA tests assessed significant differences. Results: a total of 222 patients were analyzed: 50.2% BGA, 19.8% regional, 15.3% mixed, 9.9% sedation, and 4.8% TIVA. The overall hypothermia incidence was 36.5%, being more frequent in BGA (46.8%) and mixed (35.5%). The mean final temperature was 35.6 ± 0.6 °C. Significant differences were found among anesthesia types (p < 0.05). Conclusions: BGA had the highest incidence of postoperative hypothermia, emphasizing the need for specific preventive strategies.
