ABSTRACT
Hypertrichosis is defined as excessive growth of body hair
compared to what is considered typical for individuals of
the same age, sex, and ethnic background. It occurs in
areas that are not usually influenced by androgenic hormones.
This article reviews emblematic cases, both historical
and contemporary—such as those of Pedro González
in the 16th century, Julia Pastrana in the 19th century, and
Jesús Aceves in the present day—to illustrate how individuals
with this dermatological condition have been subjected
to stigmatization, discrimination, and exploitation.
Through a historical and social lens, the article highlights
the importance of a comprehensive and empathetic medical
approach in dermatology that promotes dignity, psychosocial
well-being, and social inclusion for those living with
hypertrichosis.
