ABSTRACT

Polio is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause irreversible paralysis and death. Thanks to mass vaccination and epidemiological surveillance efforts, Mexico eliminated polio in 1990, and the Americas were certified polio-free in 1994. This article, marking the 35th anniversary of elimination in Mexico, reviews the global and regional initiative for its eradication, national milestones, current epidemiology, and the role of vaccination. Recent data on polio vaccination coverage is incorporated, and current achievements and challenges are analyzed, including the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on coverage and strategies to maintain elimination and advance toward global eradication.
