Skin infections caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria, associated with aesthetic procedures

ABSTRACT

Nontuberculous mycobacterial (ntm) infections have emerged as a complication associated with minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. We present a retrospective observational study of 12 cases treated between 2021 and 2025, mostly women, with a history of mesotherapy or other elective surgical interventions such as rhinoplasty, abdominoplasty, liposuction, and breast augmentation. The most frequent clinical manifestation was the appearance of persistent subcutaneous nodules at the infiltration site. In cases with microbiological isolation, Mycobacterium abscessus was identified as the causative agent. The diagnosis was established by culture or compatible histopathological findings, supported by the clinical history. All patients received combination antibiotic treatment. This report emphasizes the importance of clinical surveillance for persistent skin lesions after aesthetic procedures, as well as the risks associated with unregulated cosmetic practices. Given antimicrobial resistance and the difficulty of treatment, timely clinical suspicion, appropriate diagnostic methods, and an individualized therapeutic approach are crucial. Strengthening the regulation and oversight of aesthetic procedures is necessary to prevent these infections.
