Capillaroscopic Changes in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

ABSTRACT
Objective: Describe capillaroscopic changes in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Material and methods: A descriptive,
observational, cross-sectional, and prospective survey was carried out. Patients over 18 years of age with a diagnosis of type 2
diabetes who attended the Civil Hospital of Culiacan from September 2023 to October 2024 were included. The morphological changes
of the capillaries of the subungual fold were described. The findings were subsequently correlated with the evolution of the disease,
metabolic control, and complications associated with diabetes.
Results: In a study with 97 patients (mean age of 63.6 years), most
had hypertension (56%) and grade I obesity. Seventy percent had inadequate diabetes control (mean HbA1C of 8.7%). The most
common microvascular complications were neuropathy (55.6%) and retinopathy (41.2%). Capillaroscopy showed tortuosity (71%) and
avascular area (55.6%), both associated with poor glycemic control.
Conclusions: Nailfold capillaroscopy can be an early marker of
microvascular involvement in diabetes, associated with poor glycemic control and complications such as retinopathy and neuropathy.
