Correlation between the degree of fatty infiltration of the paraspinal muscles and the degree of lumbar disc degeneration

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the correlation between the degree of fatty infiltration of the paraspinal muscles and the degree of lumbar disc degeneration, assessed by magnetic resonance imaging. Materials and methods: A retrospective, correlational, cross-sectional, and analytical study was conducted in the Department of Imaging, Diagnostics, and Therapeutics of the Ciudad Victoria Regional High Specialty Hospital. The records of 101 patients who met the selection criteria who underwent lumbar spine MRI between 2020 and 2021 were collected. Anthropometric and sociodemographic data were obtained, and a correlation was established between disc degeneration variables and fatty infiltration of the paraspinal muscles. Results: A total of 101 cases were evaluated, of which 30 were male, corresponding to 29.71%, and 71 were female, corresponding to 70.29%. The average age was 53.42 years, with a weight of 77.64 kg, height of 163 cm, and a BMI of 29.15. The average Goutallier classification obtained by the patients in the sample was 1.76. The intervertebral disc with the greatest degeneration was L5-S1, with a modified Pfirrmann scale of 5.07. Conclusions: In the present study, a correlation of 0.63 was observed between fat infiltration of the paraspinal muscles and lumbar disc degeneration.
