ABSTRACT

Septic shock is no longer viewed as a simple two-phase sequence (hyperinflammation followed by immunosuppression). Recent studies indicate that pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory pathways are activated simultaneously and in a dysregulated manner from the onset of the process, resulting in immune system derangement; this can manifest as acute hyperinflammatory damage or profound immunosuppression, predisposing the patient to nosocomial infections and multiple organ failure. The complement system acts as the central axis orchestrating this imbalance, linking inflammation, endothelial damage, and coagulation.
