Patterns and measures of alcohol use in Mexican adults: findings from the Encodat 2025

ABSTRACT

Objective. To estimate alcohol consumption according to volume, frequency, and amount consumed in the population aged 18 to 65 years, by sociodemographic variables. Materials and methods. Using data from Encuesta Nacional de Consumo de Drogas, Alcohol y Tabaco 2025, prevalence’s of current alcohol consumption and excessive consumption were estimated by sociodemographic variables. Results. Men consumed more than twice as much as women on each occasion. Young people consumed more than older adults. Men with higher educational and socioeconomic levels and who worked in the previous month reported more consumption; in women, higher consumption was observed in young women and those with a better socioeconomic level. Among those who drank in the previous year, the equivalent of 7.8 g of alcohol was consumed per day. Conclusion. The pattern of consuming large amounts of alcohol is associated with a significant number of social and health problems. Challenges persist in the implementation of effective policies.
