ABSTRACT
Objective. To describe the acceptability of public policy
modifications to reduce alcohol consumption among the
Mexican adolescent and adult population, both in total and
by sociodemographic variables.
Materials and methods.
The “Alcohol Policy” section of the 2025 National Survey of
Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Consumption was utilized. The
percentage of the population in agreement with eight public
policy modifications to reduce alcohol consumption recommended
by the World Health Organization was estimated.
Results. General approval for policies to reduce alcohol
use was high, ranging from 67% for alcohol taxes to 95.7% for
increasing penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The greatest differences in policy acceptability were observed
by alcohol consumption status.
Conclusions. The broad
acceptability of public policies to reduce alcohol consumption
suggests the feasibility of legislative actions to protect people’s
health against the risks associated with alcohol.
