ABSTRACT
Objective. To analyze the association between migration
experience in the United States and alcohol and drug
use among the Mexican population residing in Mexico.
Materials and methods. A cross-sectional study was
conducted using data from the 2025 National Survey on
Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Use. The analysis included description
of sociodemographic characteristics and consumption
prevalence according to migration experience (Yes/No);
bivariate comparison using Rao-Scott’s chi-square test and
t-tests adjusted for study design; estimation of adjusted
prevalence ratios (PR) using Poisson regression models with
robust variance; and exploration of the interaction between
migration experience and sex.
Results. The population
with migration experience showed higher prevalences of
alcohol consumption and binge drinking in the past year
(57.7 vs 45.5%) and (40.6 vs 28.6%), respectively, and lifetime
illicit drug use (24.8 vs 12.5%). In the adjusted models,
the association between migration experience and alcohol
consumption (PR= 1.18; 95%CI: 1.08,1.27) and binge drinking
(PR= 1.22; 95%CI: 1.09,1.37) remained. The interaction
with sex was significant for illicit drug use.
Conclusions.
The results suggest that migration experience may influence
alcohol consumption patterns. Migration trajectories should
be considered a relevant social determinant in the analysis
and prevention of substance use.
