ABSTRACT

There are many qualified people providing care to injured patients in every country. Most of them have remarkable stories of success in improving trauma care, many times despite having markedly restricted resources. The arising question is how to achieve more progress in a comprehensive, global fashion. The Essential Trauma Care (ETC) Project is looking forwards to formally reaching this goal. It represents a collaborative effort of the WHO and the International Society of Surgery, along with stakeholders in different countries, such as the AMMCT (Asociación Mexicana de Medicina y Cirugía de Trauma) in Mexico. The ETC Project aims to define minimal, reasonable and affordable standards for trauma care services worldwide. Furthermore, it seeks to define the resources needed to ensure the availability of such services, for almost every injured person. Finally, it seeks to establish constant efforts to promote the planning and organization required, to effectively accomplish this task in every country. In this paper, we review some of the work already done inside this international project and how it relates to Mexico.
