ABSTRACT
Introduction: in orthodontics, acid is used to bond orthodontic appliances.
Objective: to determine microhardness and characterization of enamel after debonding orthodontic appliances.
Material and methods: a longitudinal study was carried out with 68 premolars divided into: G1-control, G2-experimental without appliances, G3-metal bracket placement, and G4-aesthetic bracket placement. They were subjected to cyclic pH to subsequently measure enamel microhardness and its characterization by EDS. An ANOVA test was applied, with p < 0.05 value to establish statistically significant differences.
Results: enamel microhardness was affected in all experimental groups, although no differences were observed in groups G3 and G4 (p = 0.568). A greater presence of carbon was demonstrated in groups G3 and G4, with differences compared to G1 and G2. The oxygen results indicate that G2 differed from the rest of the groups. Regarding calcium and phosphorus, groups G1 and G2 showed differences compared to G3 and G4.
Conclusions: the application of acid in enamel impacts its microhardness, regardless of the type of bracket used. There was greater loss of calcium and phosphorus with the presence of brackets; however, the bonded bracket reduced the impact of cyclic pH, which was subsequently affected by debonding, it could be considered a risk factor for dental lesions.
