Prevalence of insulin resistance in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome

ABSTRACT

Introduction: polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. It is a heterogeneous condition marked by hyperandrogenism, anovulation, and/or polycystic ovarian morphology, often linked to metabolic issues such as obesity, insulin resistance (IR), and infertility. Hypothesis: insulin resistance occurs in over 80% of women with PCOS. Objective: to assess the incidence of IR in PCOS patients at a private clinic. Material and methods: a retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study was conducted on women diagnosed with PCOS from January 2021 to December 2023, with available serum glucose and insulin levels. Results: IR was identified in 92.2% of patients (329 women). Conclusions: female hormonal health awareness campaigns are recommended to facilitate the early diagnosis of PCOS and associated metabolic abnormalities, in order to ensure timely and multidisciplinary treatment.
