ABSTRACT

Introduction: the blood donor selection process ensures transfusion safety but reduces the number of eligible donors. Objective: to analyze the reasons for donor deferral and exclusion using categories derived from the blood donor selection process. Material and methods: an observational, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted. Records from 989 blood donation candidates attended during 2021 at the Blood Collection Center of the General Hospital of Cozumel were analyzed. Reasons for deferral or exclusion were classified into the following categories: Donation history, Donation requirements, Veins, Laboratory, Medical history, and Physical examination. Results: a total of 605 (61.2%) candidates were deferred or excluded, and 609 reasons for deferral or exclusion were identified. The Requirements category was the most frequent (45.8%), followed by Laboratory (33.3%). The most frequent unmet requirements were sleeping less than six hours, insufficient time availability, inadequate fasting, and medication use within the deferral period. Conclusions: most deferrals were associated with unmet donation requirements that can be modified before donation. Strengthening candidate education and information could reduce avoidable deferrals, increase donor recruitment, and contribute to transfusion safety.
