ABSTRACT
Introduction: rectosigmoid cavernous hemangioma is one of the less
frequent causes of lower gastrointestinal bleeding; usually it is a benign
congenital vascular lesion, presenting as recurrent chronic rectal
bleeding.
Clinical case: we present a case of rectosigmoid cavernous
hemangioma in a young patient, associated with iron deficiency anemia,
refractory to medical management. Therefore, after clinical and imaging
evaluation, it was decided to proceed with ultra-low rectal and sigmoid
resection by laparoscopy with coloanal anastomosis and protective
ileostomy as definitive treatment.
Conclusion: rectal hemangiomas
should be differential diagnoses for patients with long-standing lower
gastrointestinal bleeding, especially in young adults who do not
respond satisfactorily to medical management, in order to provide timely
management and avoid complications.
