ABSTRACT

Review of a clinical case of mucormycosis by a rare etiologic agent in a patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus that arrived to the endocrinology department of the Hospital General de Mexico because of a thyroid storm. The case of 44-year-old women, with type 2 diabetes and hypertension, that came to the emergency department with atrial fibrilation secondary to a thyroid storm triggered by an infectious process. In the physical examination, it’s observed that in the hard palatum there’s an ulcer of approximately 3 cm of diameter, with irregular edges, off-white yellow bottom, and black spots in the center, painful to manipulation. Sample for culture is taken, reporting mucormycosis, by the etiologycal agent Rhizopus azygosporus. The patient is treated with amphotericin B, methimazole, propanolol and intermediate insulin. The infection by R. azygosporus is very rare, and has high mortality associated to the poor immunologic state of the patient. This is a difficult diagnosis and spite of the opportune treatment the mortality has not been reduced. The health promotion with preventive measures, patient education and continuous training of the health personnel is mandatory for a better metabolic control and reduction of chronic complications, to improve the quality of life of our patients so, it is important the development of a sanitary culture in our population.
