ABSTRACT

From January to December 1996, a prospective trial was carried out in order to determine the usefulness of the AO classification for fractures of the thoracolumbar spine. A series of 182 patients who had spine fractures is included. The 50% was between 25 and 54 years: 72% were males and almost 70% were free of spinal cord compression or had less than 25% of canal intruding. The AO classification for this squeletal section is reviewed according to the results of treatment which were related to the classification. It is concluded that AO classification has by it self an extremely useful application in decision-taking for patients who have thoracolumbar spine fracture (p = 0.006).
