ABSTRACT

Objective. To review our experience obtained using exogenous surfactant (ES) in new born infants with breathing distress syndrome (BDS).
Material and methods. Retrospective study in 54 neonates with BDS and a body weight below 1,500 g, treated with ES. Information was obtained about the clinical evolution and in relation to adverse effects of the treatment.
Results. The premature babies went from 24 to 34 weeks of gestational age. In 15% of them the ES the surfactant was used as prophyilactic treatment and in 85% was used rescue doses. The BDS was related to pneumothorax (12%), pneumonia (52%), lung hemorrhages (29%), broncopulmonary displasy (28%) and intraventricular hemorrhages (HIV) 24%. The mortality rate of infants below 1,500 grams of body weight during the period of study was 9.8%.
Conclusions. The treatment of BDS infants with ES has been contributing to the diminished the mortality rate in these premature infants.
