ABSTRACT

Hepatitis C virus infection is a serious public health problem all over the world, and the health services are already facing numerous challenges due to the epidemiologic and financial burden caused by the disease. Chronic hepatitis C is one of the main causes of liver disease in adults. In children, hepatitis C infection is less frequent when compared to adults, but poses differences in its mode of transmission, epidemiologic features, clinical course, diagnosis criteria, and treatment. The aim of this paper is to give an overview about epidemiologic aspects of hepatitis C infection in children, detailing its magnitude, associated risk factors, as well as its epidemiologic challenges, and contribute to a better understanding about the problem in Mexico.
