Omphalocele and gastroschisis. Four years of experience

ABSTRACT
Objective. To know the clinical features and results of the surgical treatment the neonatal survival of infants with isolated gastroschisis and omphalocele in a general hospital.
Subjects and methods. The hospital files of 14 neonates with gastroschisis and seven with omphalocele and hospitalized and treated during four years were review.
Results. The birth weight of patients with gastroschisis was 2,177 ± 539 g and the other with omphalocele was 2,536 ± 469 g they have similar gestational age but eight of the newborns with gastroschisis were small for the gestational age at birth. Polyvinyl silo was installed in all of them, primary surgical closing was not realized. Auxiliary plastic patch was installed days after in three of them. Three of these neonates died (42.8%).
Conclusions. The features of the neonates studied were similar to other reported. The mortality is still high but we are realized measures to respect.
