ABSTRACT

Children who are infected with human immunodeficiency virus may develop a wide variety of mucocutaneous manifestations, such as skin infections, tumors, and inflammatory skin disorders. The most significant infectious diseases are candidiasis, herpes simplex and herpes zoster. Inflammatory disorders include seborrheic dermatitis, and vasculitis. Kaposi sarcoma is extremely rare in children. In this article we present a review of the literature describing the history, definitions, epidemiology, classification, and immunologic and clinical features of pediatric AIDS. Special emphasis is placed on the cutaneous manifestations of human immunodeficiency virus infection in children with AIDS.
