ABSTRACT

Introduction: The most common cause of gastroenteritis in the pediatric population is due to virus. Its main symptom is the vomiting. Because of its benign autolimited course, treatment is focused on the relief of the symptoms and their consequences. Material and methods: A three years retrospective study was carried out among patients of 0 to 16 years old, who were diagnosed with gastroenteritis, and had a positive test for rotavirus. Results: We collected a population of 65 patients, 54% didn't receive antibiotics while 46% did, the most frequently used being ceftriaxone. Only one case was identified with Giardia lambdia as an associated infection. No difference in length of hospital stay was observed between patients who did recibe antibiotics. Conclusions: Antibiotics are prescriebd without indication for their use in patients with viral gastroenteritis, particularly in the case of rotavirus. The treatment costs were not reduced with the use of antibiotic.
