Endoscopic cricopharyngectomy to resolve a Zenker’s diverticulum. Report of one case

ABSTRACT

Objective: To present a clinical case of a Zenker´s diverticulum treated by endoscopic cricopharyngotomy.
Setting: Centro Médico Naval.
Design: Case report
Case presentation: male 62 years old with symptomatic pharyngoesophageal diverticula and lost of weight, 7 kgs in one year. The diagnosis was made by radiological and endoscopy. The treatment was made by cricopharyngotomy using flexible endoscopy and an electro-surgery.
24 hours later the patient present cervical emphysema, managed clinically for seven days without complication, all the symptoms disappear and actually the patient is asymptomatic:
Conclusion: Endoscopic incision of Zenker´s diverticulum using flexible equipment proved to be a highly efficient and safe method of treating symptomatic disease. This procedure is not free of complications.
