ABSTRACT

Introduction: The cardiac power (CP) is an estimation of the function of bomb of the heart.
Objective: To assess the utility of the CP in the prognosis of patients with septic shock (SS).
Material and methods: Prospective study, including patients (p) with diagnosis of SS and Swan-Ganz catheter from January to August 2006. The CP delta (D), haemodynamic variables, and oxygen transport were measured at beginning of the study and 24 hrs later.
Results: A total of 23 p, divided in two groups: Survivers n = 13, CP 0.6 (0.5-1.25) D PC 75 (33-100). Not survivers n = 10, PC 0.85 (0.8-1.07) D PC -31 (-40 – 0). The D PC when stays constant or decreases, predicts mortality with an 80% sensibility and 84.6% specificity, area under the curve ROC of 0.82.
Conclusions: The D PC at 24 hrs is a predictor of mortality in SS.
