ABSTRACT

The School of Medicine at UNAM has been carrying out research for over 50 years. There are 464 research projects currently registered in the different fields of expertise. Principal investigators include 190 full-time and associate professors. In the last three years, the average number of publications in different areas has been 145.3 in international peer-reviewed journals compared with 95.3 in local journals. The average time to complete a research protocol is two years, including submitting a scientific manuscript to a journal. The departments with the highest productivity in these last 50 years include Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology and Microbiology. The number of senior researchers (Level III) belonging to the National Council’s of Science and Technology Researcher’s System (SNI) has doubled. The School of Medicine maintains a good pace in productivity although efforts to improve are still being implemented. A greater commitment between the academic community and the government is undoubtedly required in order to keep our leadership as the best school of medicine, not only in Mexico, but also in Latin America.
