ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Blood Central Bank (BCS) elaborates a panel of known phenotype cells, and allows to identify the specificity of the detected antibodies facilitating the search for compatible blood. In 2001 a comprehensive group of altruistic Rh-negative and special phenotype donors was created. One of the primary aims of social work within a blood bank is to address the special needs of Rhnegative blood and phenotypes. In each blood group the hematies have in their surface a substance (antigen) different from each group. These antigens are substances that characterize each individual and are markers for their ethnic origin. They are also found in different frequencies within a given population. In transfusions, the donor and the receiver must belong to the same ABO and Rh blood group.
Material and Methods: We describe the our experience during the last five years. The social worker working in a medical field must counsel and educate the relatives of donors with Rh-negative and special phenotypes. Each case is addressed individually in order to offer high quality services. The latter will motivate the donor to give other blood components. Our database includes a list of possible candidates. We contact them by phone, and set up an appointment with a physician and a chemist. We then proceed to add him/her to the group of potential donors for further follow-up.
Results and Conclussion: We were able to collect a roster of 928 donors. Our program has been successful since we have recorded how donors return to our center for subsequent donations.
