ABSTRACT

The objective of this paper is to describe the medical care off in the newborn infant during the last third of the nineteenth century at the Maternity-Infancy Hospital in Mexico City which was the first public welfare institution in the country.
Some historical data about the hospital are also mentioned as well as the onset of the speciality of Neonatology in Paris, France. Features of the first incubator manufactured in Mexico are described and its usefulness in the care of premature infant.
