ABSTRACT
Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the «Kangaroo» technique.
Method: The study design was cross-sectional 210 low birth weight (LBW) infants were admitted for this
technique in 6 years; all of them were follow-up for 90 days. Data
obtained include: anthropometric evolution, maternal data, mother child attachment and newborn morbidity and
mortality.
Results: The gestational age was 35 ± 5 weeks, weight 1750 ± 750 g, maternal age 27 ± 13 years, 57.1% without complete elementary school, 77.2% without prenatal control, weight increases 13.5 ± 6.5 g/day, head perimeter 1 ± 0.5 cm/month and length 1.5 ± 1 cm/month; days stayed in incubators: 10 ± 6. The technique improve family bonding. Morbility 20%, mortality 8.5%, mainly babies weighing under 1500 g.
Conclusions: The «Kangaroo» technique is safe for
caring LBW infants in families with low socioeconomic status, increases family relationship and could be easily implemented.
