ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate the reinnervation and dynamic of keratocytes after penetrating keratoplasty with confocal microscopy.
Material and methods: A prospective, longitudinal, observational and descriptive study was made. Three patients were included with no infection or inflammatory pathology. Postoperative evaluation with confocal microscopy was made on day 1, 15, and each 30 days during one year. ConfoScan 3 Nidek technologies were used in all patients.
Results: Reinnervation was present in two cases. Keratocytes had minimal activation. Epithelization was present at day 15 in all patients. Changes related with edema were present at day 30 and continued during follow up. No clinical rejection was found across the study.
Comments: Epithelization depends on many factors not only reinnervation. Density of keratocytes increase after penetrating keratoplasty, but the activation is not intense.
