ABSTRACT
Introduction:The use of ultrasound for the diagnosis of the thyroid nodule is practically a routine procedure at present; however its actual contribution is still controversial.
Objective:To analyze the usefulness of ultrasound as a support in the management of the thyroid nodule.
Patients and methods:We performed a retrospective analysis of patients subjected to thyroid surgery in two different hospitals. We analyzed the data obtained through ultrasound and compared them with the final histopathological result.
Results:We analyzed a total of 396 clinical records. Three-hundred sixty two patients presented some type of nodular pathology of the thyroid gland and were subjected to studies. Neck ultrasound was performed in 344 patients (94%). In total, in 83 cases was the diagnosis of malignancy suggested by the ultrasound; from these, the final diagnosis of malignancy could be correlated through histology only in 27.7% (23 patients).
Conclusion:Ultrasound is useful for the diagnosis of a thyroid nodule, however, its sensitivity to determine whether the thyroid lesions are malignant or benign is limited, as well as its influence to indicate surgery.
