ABSTRACT

It is a frequent clinical observation, that in certain cases of alternate, constant exotropia with similar and good vision in both eyes, in which there is no possibility of showing phoria by means of complete strabological exploration, including fusion tests (Worth and 4 D prism), show fusion and phoria after surgery. These could be cases of masked (deteriorated) exophoria-tropia. That is why, in similar cases, before surgery cyclopentolate at 0.1% is applied in order to excite the accommodative convergence and help to fusional convergence and in that way, try to establish which of them are capable of fusion and to achieve the diagnosis of masked exophoria-tropia. A demonstrative clinical case is presented.
