ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the incidence, management and results of infantile otosclerosis at Hospital Juarez de Mexico.
Material and methods: From January, 1995 to January, 2003 clinical files from the external consultation of the otolaryngological and audiology service of Hospital Juarez de Mexico were analyzed and those from children younger than 16 years with previous clinical diagnosis of otosclerosis were included.
Results: Twenty-seven files were included, from which 12 were submitted to stapedectomy and 15 were given audiological control, medical management and auditory adaptation. From these, in 9 disease stabilization was observed after auditory control during two years and surgical procedure was proposed then (18-23 years). Three patients received medical management and endocrinological control in who audifluor was given and to other three the use of auditory aid was favorable and they did not received surgical treatment.
Conclusions: In patients with data otospongiosis medical management is recommended with auditory control, and once established the disease, stapedectomy may give good results.
