ABSTRACT

Purpose: To identify the main characteristics of epidemic distribution of venous occlusive disease (VOD) of retina in patients of the Centro Médico Nacional «La Raza» of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social.
Material and methods: The Regional Survey of Occlusive Disease was applied to all cases of central or branch VOD of the retina from February 1998 to January 1999. No age or sex restriction was done. The patients of this prospective study where first time patients who attended external consultation.
Results: 74 new cases were identified, 43.2% of central type and 56.8% belonged to the branch variant. The age average was 64.8 years. The age group with more incidences among women was 75 to 79 years and 80 to 84 years for men. Using the direct method, the rate of total adjusted incidence was of 2.76 for 100,000; being distributed 2.37 for women, and 3.21 for males.
Conclusions: The findings on the epidemiological characteristics of the EOV adjusted by age groups and sex in Mexican population allow to deepen the even scarce knowledge of this illness and to plan future actions.
Conclusions: The findings on the epidemiological characteristics of the EOV in Mexican population allow to know more about this illness and to plan future actions.
