ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the prevalence of the peripheral aneurysms in the Hospital de Especialidades Centro Médico "La Raza".
Background: The incidence and prevalence of the peripheral aneurysms is low, however, the detection opportune and the treatment appropriate, to decrease loss of the extremity and death.
Material and methods: There were carried out retrospective, transverse and descriptive study, identifying in the census of the Service of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, during the period of March 2002 to March 2004, all the patients with diagnostic of peripheral aneurysm. A registration of their anatomical localization, clinical presentation, cabinet study carried out to confirm diagnostic, treatment and results measuring the permeability of the graft placed by means of use of Doppler duplex, was made. The statistical analysis was of descriptive type.
Results: 11 patients were identified with peripheral aneurysm. Seven men and 4 women, with age average 61.5 years and 14 aneurysms in total. Finding 5 in popliteal, 2 in superficial femoral artery, 1 in common femoral artery, type I; 1 in common femoral type II, 2 in superficial temporary artery, 1 in facial artery, 1 axillary artery and 1 in iliac artery. Extremity loss in 1 patient and 1 patient with postoperative hematoma, no mortality.
Conclusions: The most frequent anatomical localization was in popliteal artery in 35.7%, similar to that reported in the literature. With a low morbidity and loss of the extremity only 7%, without reporting deaths. There were aneurysms in other localizations not previously reported, 2 cases in superficial temporary artery, and 1 in facial artery.
