ABSTRACT

The University Hospital at the U.A.N.L., in cooperation with the «Instituto Nuevo Amanecer» at Monterrey, N.L realized a retrospective study to evaluate the functional results of total release procedure in children with cerebral palsy. The study was conducted from january 1993 to March 1997. The group studied consisted of 52 individuals; 33 male and 19 female. The following parameters were considered: 1) difficulty to perfom perineal hygiene 2) passive range of motion of lower extremities 3) wheel chair position 4) pelvic obliquity 5) gait 6) ambulatory status.
Al1 individuals presented spastic cerebral palsy, 30 were quadriplegic and 22 diplegic, 29 were no-ambulatory and 23 ambulatory under therapy. Average age at time of surgery was six years. Al1 of them were subject to total release and the average follow-up was with a minimum of six months and a maximum of four years.
Results were considered satisfactory, since evaluated parameters improved; additionally, total release procedure reduced: risk of multiple surgery cost and prolonged hospitalization; the diving syndrome is also avoided.
