ABSTRACT

Introduction: Analgesic treatment for painful procedures is very limited in some medical units. There are several nursing procedures performed during the daily neonatal care that cause pain that must be prevented and treated to which there are several nonpharmacology approaches that can easily be done by nurses before the procedures.
Objective: To compare the efficacy of two non-pharmacology strategies to treat and prevent the pain that is caused by nursing procedures in new born infants.
Methodology: A clinical trial was performed in 88 children older than 35 weeks of gestation, who were born in the Gynecology and Pediatric Unit 48 Hospital, in Leon, Guanajuato, state. 44 of them received glucose 30%, per mouth, just two minutes previous to the painful procedure. The rest of the infants were offered non-nutritious suction of a pacifier. Both groups were evaluated during the painful stimulus through a validated scale and they were recorded to verify that evaluation.
Results: There were not differences between two groups. Both procedures showed up similar efficacy to treat and prevent pain.
Discussion: Both non-pharmacology approaches, the use of glucose 30% per mouth and the non-nutritious suction of pacifier, are useful to prevent pain when they are used two minutes previous to the performance of nursing procedures in new born infants. Its use should be instituted as a necessary or mandatory intervention in new born room.
