ABSTRACT
The most dynamic phenomenon observed in the mouth is the occlusion. The characteristics of the occlusion during the primary dentition are considered precursor of the characteristics on the permanent dentition and therefore the importance of its understanding.
Objective: The purpose for this work was to study the characteristics of dental occlusion during the primary dentition in a group of Mexican children with a middle-low socioeconomical class.
Sample: Forty two boys and 58 girls, both groups from 3 to 5 years old with complete temporal dentition were examined.
Material and methods: An observational, prolective, transversal and descriptive study was performed. The characteristics were observed on study models and the data was analyzed in the SPSS program and the chi-square test with a 95% of confidence.
Results: The ovoid was the most frequent arch form in 71% of the boys and 74% of the girls in the maxillae, in the mandibulae 81% of the girls and 64% of the boys. The primate inverted spaces were observed in 7% of the boys and 22% of the girls. The overbite was shown in 57% of the boys and 55% of the girls, the ideal overjet in 52% for the boys and 59% for the girls. The canine relation class 1 represented 88% in boys and 85% in girls. The terminal mesial plane in 79% of the boys and 81% of the girls.
Conclusions: The considered ideal characteristics may have variations given the racial origin of the subjects without altering the occlusion or its development.
