ABSTRACT

The investigation’s first stage took place with 300 10-12 year old boys and girls from 9 elementary schools from Montes de Oca and Curridabat in San Jose City, Costa Rica, during 2004. Knowledge related to fruits and vegetables’ nutritional characteristics were determined through a knowledge index validated with diverse statistical procedures and a mathematical formula. A high percentage of the children were placed in a deficient category, while only a small percentage in a good and optimal index category. There were no significant differences in boys and girls’ knowledge about fruits and vegetables; however, there were some differences between children from different socioeconomic levels because children from a high socioeconomic level shown a better knowledge index than those children in low and medium socioeconomic levels.
