Key words:

High order aberrations, cornea, keratoconus.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To obtain the advantages of an aberrometry in patients with keratoconus analyzing the anterior surface for greater understanding of the optical behaviour.
Material and methods: Measurement with wave front of corneal high order aberrations in healthy and patients individuals with keratoconus. The typical of high order aberrations of the anterior corneal surface were evaluated, excluding the intraocular aberrations. 70 eyes of 43 patients were studied; 29 eyes without ocular pathology associated and 41 eyes with at least one clinical sign of keratoconus. Aberrometrical measurement for each eye of both groups was realised.
Results: The square root average of the aberrations of the even polynomials z4 and z6 (spherical like) and of the odd numbers z3, z5 and z7 (coma like) were evaluated. Cone stage I, square root average (coma like) 1.50 to 2.50 Mm; stage II ›2.50 to ‹3.50 Mm, stage III ›3.50 to <4.50 Mm, stage IV ›4.50 Mm.
Conclusion: High order corneal aberrations are significantly majors in eyes with keratoconus.
