ABSTRACT

Objective. In this report it was reviewed the files in order to examine the clinical findings related to hepatic biopsy practiced in the hospitalized children with hepatic problems.
Material and methods. We retrospectively reviewed the results of the histopathological tissues of liver obtained by hepatic biopsies in 63 children in the last 17 years. Data in regard to age and sex of children, the histopathological diagnosis, the indication and type of the biopsy were obtained.
Results. The percutaneous liver biopsy was done in 47 (74.6%) and by laparotomy in 16 (25.4%). The diagnosis most frequent done were: neonatal hepatitis 10 (15.9%), chronic active hepatitis 7 (11.2%), chronic cryptogenic active hepatitis 7 (11.2%) and glycogenosis type I in 6 (9.5%). Other 19 children had various diagnostics. There was not any accident related to the biopsies.
Conclusions. In our experience the liver biopsy has been a useful procedure for the diagnosis or treatment of children with liver diseases.
