ABSTRACT

Objective. To know the frequency transfusion of blood components in a private hospital for children and the justification of that.
Material and methods. Eighty six children’s files transfused of blood components in a year were revised. The ward requested the transfusion, the type of blood component which was transfused and its justification.
Results. One hundred and seventy six transfusions were made in the 86 children. Of those, 34 [39.5%] were from the pediatrics intensive care unit, 31 [36%] were from the service of Hemato-oncology, they had the highest frequency. The transfusion of the red blood cell package and the fresh frozen plasm were the most used ones. The unjustified employment of the transfusion was in 26/176 (15.0%), there were not adverse accidents neither complications.
Conclusions./ It was found that the frequency of unjustified transfusions falls inside of an acceptable margin. Children of transfusion recommendations and blood components transfusion are revised.
