Precocious puberty and myelomeningocele patients

ABSTRACT

Objective: To establish precocious puberty beginning age in children (both sex) attending to the medical assistance department in the Centro de Rehabilitación Infantil Teletón (CRIT), Estado de México, México. Design: An observational, prospective, descriptive and transverse, to a blind and cohort type study. Material and methods: 22 patients, all of them with an established diagnostic of myelomeningocele, all bigger to four years old: girls were younger than eight and boys younger than nine years old. A clinical evaluation with application of Tanner Scale was practiced, as well as an ultrasound scanning measurement of testicles or of female’s ovaries. Results: 14 patients finished the study, two of them (14.29%) were diagnostic with precocious puberty, one male and one female six and seven years old respectly, both with hydrocephalus; the neurology injury were thoracic on one patient and lumbar in other . Applying t Student test, it was found a 95% confidence level. All the patients with precocious puberty presented associated hydrocephalus. Conclusions: The age of precocious puberty beginning was 6 and 7 years in a boy and in a girl respectively.
